Full Time - Day 33 part II
Came across this random journal entry from 2016, when I was just beginning my chess quest -
Feb 17, 2016
Took the Howard
train and 97 bus transfer to the Evanston Chess Club tonight. Arrived
early and helped M set up the boards then watched her play through a Candidates game
between Fisher/Larsen 1971, Denver. Half way through the game a man
joined us in analyzing the game, and I admit I was irritated by his
manner and words, one of
those chess know-it-alls, bragging seemingly to build his own self
worth. Does he realize how much a single snapshot in that game
contains? He went on and on, his
words exhibiting not only his arrogance, but also his ignorance. When
G walked in M suggested I play him, but the loudmouth braggart said "no, I'm
playing G". I did not say anything to that, and ended up playing
S. Encountering this kind of ignorance/arrogance is a reason for me
to shun attending club
nights, and sticking to tournaments where people are forced to be
quiet during play.
After playing S a
few games the casual blitz round robin started, I did ok, but ended
up a bit scattered once my clock was below one minute. When I played
the braggart it was
pleasant enough, but he had the awful habit of speaking out my moves
when they caused him surprise. He played a good game and beat me, but he missed some kill
shot moves to put me away sooner. I'd guess he is a grade B player,
which is decent enough, but his attitude is grade F.
Dealing with people
like F isn't too difficult, and although I am complaining about him
in this entry, I realize that his words, just like mine and everyone
else's, are meaningless
clouds which quickly scatter and disappear - mere illusions meant to
deceive with both their beauty and ugliness. The thing I need to keep
in mind is that all words
are deceptions, and although I can form judgments about the state of
someone's mind through his actions and words, when it comes to the final analysis I
know the judgments are inaccurate and the best thing to do is to
always let go of the impressions, as easily as the words themselves
let go of their own
flimsy reality.
Full Time - Day 33
Ran 4 miles at 7:00am and the sky was gray and the air cool, then walked to the library for 4 hours of chess study, a man named Dmitry asked to play, he was decent with tactics but his openings and positional sense was below standard, in the middle game I had built up a strong position against his un-castled king and was threatening Bxd3 -
Dmitry made his move, Nc1, I wrote it down and continued playing, not realizing that Nc1 is an illegal move.
After Nc1 I lost the thread of the game and made a number of poor moves and lost the rook on b2 in exchange for his bishop. Later in the game I was teetering on the ledge of defeat when I was gifted with a chess miracle, checkmating Dmitry with a rook and 2 bishops, a karmic gift to perhaps make up for Nc1!

Full Time - Day 32
Cold and gray in the morning with a bit of blue peaking through, enough to remind me of more beautiful and healthy times. Walked the Navy Pier route then walked to the library for a 5 hour chess study session. A man named Jawanza stopped at my table for a game, he played a tight hedge hog position as white so I had to think hard about how to proceed and find a strategy to exploit it. I had a satisfying moment when I found an indirect way to defend against 27.Nc3, creating a pin on his bishop at c2, I was not too surprised when he quickly played 27.Nc3 because he tended not to think too long on any move so after 27...RxN the game was technically over.

Full Time - Day 31
A cold rainy toxic sky day, nothing unusual for the year 2019, which marks the year that is the beginning of the end of life on earth. If something positive can be said about it, from an individual perspective, it is that being aware of impending death I am reminded to live each day as mindfully and aware as possible, to take not a single conscious moment for granted.
Walked Navy Pier route in the early morning and then walked to the library for a productive 6 hour chess study session. A man named Jerome stopped at my table and asked to play a couple of games, I had played him last week, he thanked me after the game and said "that was great therapy, I came to the library to clear my head, now I can't remember why I was so angry". Today I asked him if he was having a better day and he said not so much, his 90 year old mother was giving him cause for concern. He sat down and these were the games -

Walked to the library in the late morning for a short chess study session. It was short because I had plans to meet my nephew P at Lake Shore Park at 4:30pm, so at 2:30 I left the apartment and ran 4 miles to Diversey Harbor and then walked 2 miles to Lake Shore Park where I met P and we walked to Lincoln Park along the lake shore path talking of various things, at the zoo entrance I left him and walked 3 miles home for a longer than normal exercise session. The sky was shredded with toxic materials being dropped from many airplanes and it was the first hot day of 2019 in Chicago, mid 80's and my thirst was high because I had lost all of my heat acclimatization from Se Asia.

Walked to Navy Pier in the morning, cold and gray, the world governments have blanketed the earth in a toxic haze created from airplanes dropping material into the atmosphere and this has had a cool down effect for various regions of the world, while other regions are already massively heating up. Atmospheric CO2 is now at 415ppm, the highest recording yet and it is going ever higher. There is no need of any further evidence, the earth will soon be devoid of all conscious life forms.
Walked to the library after Navy Pier and studied chess for 6 hours.

Took the shuttle to Hammond to play in the $60 tournament, did alright but did not make it to the final table. The best part of the day was walking along the lake after the tournament, day was cool but first blue sky in a long while, it won't last but it is amazing that a blue sky can still show up in 2019, the clean sky is going extinct.
Walked to the library in the evening to study chess. Someone surprisingly took the reference book Chess Scandals, not a problem because I was only a few games away from the end, and I happened to be synchronized with those final games in the Learn From Your Defeats book and tonight I finished the Karpov/Korchnoi games, so moving on to a new book in the next session.

Full Time - Day 15
Since returning from SE Asia in March there has been one warm day over 70f and just a few days where the sky was blue. Out of 55 days 52 have been completely white and gray. I am still in the process of grieving for the imminent death of all life on earth, but as I walked home from the library today under a toxic white sky I had an insight which I have had before, but it seemed more clear, that time is not so much linear as it is circular, which means that although the current time is a deadly and diseased one for living things on earth, it should not be taken as more solid and real than a time 2000 years ago or a time 2000 years into the future, that all points of time past present and future are relative to and equal to one anther, which means that although consciousness can only be aware of a limited amount of things happening at any certain point of time, those things cannot be taken as any more important than any other, which means that although death is coming soon for everything on earth, the time is no different than any other point in time and circumstances of pleasure and pain, life and death, are insignificant to consciousness because consciousness is simply an observer of time and is outside of it, thus consciousness, when aware that it has no self and no body, has nothing to fear, nothing to be angry about, and nothing to do but observe until leaving the body and transitioning into some other form of consciousness.

Full time - day 14
Took the shuttle to Hammond to play in a $130 tournament, busted out in the middle of a small field of 34, had some decent hands early so was able to maintain my stack in the 14-16,000 range until just before the second break, when the small blind shoved all in for 6500 with blinds at 400/800, I had A10 so an easy call, he showed down J5 off suit, player in the 1 seat says "I folded a jack", 2 jacks come on the flop and I am drawing dead, now down to 9,500 chips, happy to be alive but if I can't hold up against a 2 outer I felt it was not going to be my day. After the second break I regained a small amount of chips and when I had 12,000 chips with blinds at 600/1200 I shoved from middle position with KJ offsuit, not the greatest hand but I decided to go with it, a player in late position calls with AJ and I am unable to suck out.
Good news is I sat down at a $1/2 table for 30 minutes before the tournament and won $122, most of it coming when I flopped a set of sevens, so for a full day's fun I spent $8.
The day is a sickly gray, cold, raining, May 11 and winter is still settled in the midwest, USA. The daily toxic sky reminds me to focus on my imminent death, hoping to stay positive and focused on maintaining a calm and clear mind, what else is to be done?

Full Time - Day 12
Another day of no sun, I should begin making entries focused on the dystopian nature of life on earth in 2019, these are surely the end of days for living things on the planet.
Ran 4 miles under a cold and metallic-infused white sky, then walked to the library to study chess.
Even though life on earth is coming to an end in a very short time, I still need to live as best I can, and I saved $10 on groceries at Mariano's using a coupon I received in the mail. How very odd that my mind can mix the big picture of soon to be death and the tiny technical matters which keep me alive for another day.

Full Time - Day 9
Walked around Navy Pier in the morning and observed the sky covered in toxic materials, which is nothing unusual, everyday for years the military has been manipulating the atmosphere, dumping poisons into the air. Within a decade civilization and habitat for all life will be decimated.
Walked to the library in the mid morning and studied chess, also checked out a few books on meditation and Buddhist philosophy.
Received an email from the Global Foodbank Network letting me know they would not be offering me the job, no surprise because a 2 hour interview with one person gives me plenty of rope to hang myself.

Full Time - Day 8
First nice day in a long while where the sun was shining but the atmosphere is fully saturated with toxic material which causes a sickly haze to cover the sun and sky and the blue skies of a decade ago only exist in my mind. Because of the moderate warmth I was able to run 4 miles faster than normal and afterward I ate breakfast and then walked to the library to study chess.

Full Time - Day 7
Walked to the library in the morning and studied chess for 3 hours. Not much else to report other than disease, death and the end of civilization coming ever closer due to Atmospheric CO2 at 411ppm and the skies being sprayed with toxic materials.

Full Time - Day 6
Walked 3 blocks to 70 E Lake street for a 2:00 pm interview at Global Foodbank Group, talked with the finance/accounting director for 2 hours, it went alright, only part I drew a blank was when he asked about accrual vs cash accounting, which are concepts I read about years ago but had no need to remember due to a clerk doing grunt work rather than the heavy lifting of creative accounting management. Due to the interview lasting two hours, which means I had to talk quite a bit, I am 99% certain I will not be offered the job based on past interviews where I talked much to no avail. When interviews are short and the interviewer does most of the talking is when I have good chances of being offered a job, most likely due to my thoughts having a rather isolated style and this certainly rubs people the wrong way. The less I say the better it goes.
No chess study today because of the interview. I plan to study chess tomorrow at the library.
I cleaned the condo today.

Full Time - Day 5
Library was closed today so after walking 6 miles under a cold gray sky I relaxed in the condo and did not do too much. Interview tomorrow at 2:00pm.
Only 1 chess game studied today, Spassky/Karpov 1974 from the Caro-Kann book.

Full Time - Day 4
Had a phone interview today with the Global Food Network, a non-profit which distributes food worldwide to countries in need. The interview was a long one, 40 minutes, and it must have gone well enough because I was invited to their office for an interview this Friday at 2:00pm. The position is part-time, which means I will be hardly getting by with low cash flow, but I will be relatively time-rich, which is a pleasurable counterbalance.
Due to the interview I skipped a library chess session today and instead studied from home.
