Got up with the birds and was out walking to Mertasari Beach as the sun was breaking the horizon, a bit of rain overnight made the streets wet but things dried quickly once the sun began its morning ascent.
After exercises in the beach parking lot I walked further than usual, wandering to the beach side street near Hardy's, I was wondering if the artist I met in 2012 was still around the area but I could not find his shop. I stopped into Hardy's and bought a few items, then walked home and made a pasta brunch.
My skin rash is beginning to clear, I can now sleep without being woken from itching/burning skin.

Day 76
Was up at sunrise and out running the sea path as gray wet light began to illuminate my way. My legs felt slightly stiff but my energy was high, so I ended up going the maximum distance I thought prudent to allow, 5.5 miles.
I have been studying chess every evening, the Zurich 1953 book, having gone through 98 of the games thus far, and also working on 2 tactics problems per night, hoping these training methods will allow me to perform well at the HD Bank International Chess Tournament in Vietnam next month.

Day 75
Woke up and it was still dark, it felt like morning, and within a few minutes I heard the birds start to sing so I knew the sun was coming up and I got up and was soon walking to Mertasari Beach and did a few muscle exercises then stopped at Pepito market and bought a piece of apple pie and when I returned to the apartment made pasta for brunch and ate the apple pie for desert and then I took a nap and when I woke I studied the Zurich 1953 chess book.
I have been having good book karma on this journey, in Bangkok there was a copy of Howard Zinn's history of the USA which I had been wanting to read so I read as much as I could during the 10 days I was in Bangkok, and now that I am in Bali there is a book called Kisses from Katie, which I had not heard of but because I had finished the Maugham short stories which I had brought with me from Thailand, I had nothing else to read and with no used bookstores in Sanur I felt the need to read something good.
I am reminded of my time spent in Boulder City, Nevada, I lived in a hotel for 3 weeks and when I first arrived I had no book with me to read and no computer or internet access and I felt a deep yearning for words to read which I knew would nourish my spirit. There is a thrift store on the main street and they had a small book section but most of the books were romance or mysteries, which is poor quality when looking for something to feed the spirit, so I declined to read those, but I did find a book by Stephen Crane, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, a novella of short length, and although I was hoping for something by Hesse, Orwell, Emerson, Kerouac, this would have to do, as the only other book which I found of interest was a desert survivalist guide, and because I was planning on soon leaving the hotel to go and live in the desert on the shore of Lake Mead, I bought both books and was soon satisfied to lay in my hotel bed reading about Maggie.
And so lately I have been feeling similar to that time in Boulder City, a hunger for words and stories which can inspire the spirit to face the difficulties of day to day living with positive energy and courage of action. And so I began to read Katie's story about her love of God and how this love led her to give up her comfortable life in the USA and move to Uganda in order to help people less fortunate than herself. While I believe that the specific God she loves exists only in her imagination, it does not diminish the reality which is produced by this inner vision of love and peace, and this vision leads to positive external actions which makes the hellish world a bit more positive. Everyone has a unique, one of a kind vision, whether it be an imaginary God, or a collection of philosophical ideas and images, and if we are bold enough to follow the vision, no matter where it leads us to, then hell can be diminished one life at a time, and if a miracle were to happen and everyone followed the vision, then hell would become an empty room and would soon be forgotten.
Not sure if I am going to run tomorrow, if I do it would be best if the distance is no longer than 5 miles.

Day 74
Only had 4 hours of sleep yesterday because I watched The Last Temptation of Christ until 2:00am, but regardless I was awake when birds started to sing and decided to get out to the beach path and do some running, ended up almost going the full length of the out and back, 8 1/2 miles, longest run of the year and my toes were feeling ok and the rash is slowly going away.
2 weeks left in Bali, then it will be time to fly to Nha Trang, Vietnam.

Day 73
Bit of a lazy day, although I did get up at sunrise and walked to Mertasari beach for exercise. Will run tomorrow morning as my toes seem a bit better.
$20 dollars under budget this week, not as strong as Thailand but acceptable.

Day 72
Rash slowly diminishing, my skin is peeling so that is a sign that the burn is healing. Ironic how applying a product which is supposed to protect the skin from the sun caused a severe burning rash which has lasted 2 weeks.
Tried to improve the state of my black toe nail but had no luck removing the excess nail material.Plan to take tomorrow off from running so that the soreness subsides and try again to improve the nail structure.
Spent the evening updating the current state of my travel budget, it looks like I will be under budget by more than $1600 by trip's end.
I took a walk to the end of Mertasari Beach and as I stood on the stone embankment I realized I was at the exact spot where I made the photo which I use for this blog's title page. There has been a major change to the place, though, a cement pier has been erected that juts 100m into the sea, it does not look all that bad but it blocks the view of the sea if one is facing east.

Day 71
Rash actually may have decreased slightly, although still many days away from my skin feeling normal, at least it is going in the right direction.
Ran 6.5 miles today on the sea path, sunrise quite muted with clouds, but that made the run easier because there was no direct sunlight to contend with. One of my toenails, along with being black (a typical condition for distance runners), has an unhealthy buildup of nail material, and it is too sore to clip it away, so I may have to lay off long runs and practice sprinting until the nail is no longer tender and then work on clipping the nail structure.
In the afternoon I washed clothes in the bathroom sink and sun dried them on a rack. Also studied four Zurich chess games and worked on tactics problems. I am starting to sharpen my chess training because I plan to participate in the 9 round HD Bank International Chess Tournament in Saigon, Vietnam. Learning and training chess is similar to learning a language, it has to be practiced everyday so that the mind can create pathways of memory and understanding.
Finished reading the Maugham short stories, now I am out of reading material so I may try to find a bookshop. There are two books which I found in my apartment, one is a political book by Michael Moore, the other a memoir of a Christian missionary who worked in Uganda.

Day 70
Listened to the superbowl this morning, then walked to Pepito and across the street is an Indian restaurant, the waitress looked to be about 13 years old and spoke no English, so she handed me her phone which had a translator and she asked me to type on it but I did not know what she wanted to know, but eventually the food arrived and I carried it home and after eating took a nap and then studied chess.
Bumped into my AirBnB host in the afternoon and said hello, she gave me a box of Indonesian tea to try, she is very kind.
Rash is still quite severe, looks like I am going to have skin problems for the next 10-15 days, if not longer.

Day 69
Slow day, got up late due to a fitful sleep caused by the heat rash. Walked to Mertasari Beach and did a few exercises, stopped at the market, made pasta and then napped. The only time the rash causes discomfort is in the evenings, so my best sleep comes when I nap in the afternoon. So far there is no indication that the rash is healing, it is hanging around looking as if it plans to stay on my arms and legs indefinitely. I can only hope that will not be the case.
Finished reading the short stories by Somerset Maugham, very impressive, Maugham is one of the best writers that I have crossed paths with. In one sense I have nothing whatever in common with the narrator of his stories, as he usually appears to be well connected, good looking, famous, and wealthy, in other words, a winner. I contrast that with a writer such as Bukowski, who worked a common job, was homely, and not until his later years did he overcome poverty and obscurity, a loser. As for me, I have all of the qualities of the loser, with the added bonus of having no special talents, a loser's loser. Regardless, there is a quality to Maugham's writing that even losers can't help but to learn a few things about life and it's intricate schemes and mysteries.
I plan on skipping the morning run tomorrow so that I can watch the superbowl at 7:30am. Maybe I will run in the evening.

Day 68
Even though my sleep was choppy due to my rash/burn I was able to get up at 5:30 and reached the beach path as the sun was rising. Not a bad sunrise, but with the sky filled with luminosity killing filler it reminded me of a dull matte paint finish. Made it to the Hindu temple but stopped after 1 mile on the return trip for a total of 5 miles, not too bad, all things considered.
Rash still in full force, wondering when it will abate and what kind of damage it did to my skin health, which was already in a degraded state.

Day 67
Both of my pens have mysteriously disappeared, so I decided to walk to Hardy's this morning. I was looking forward to seeing the taxi stand with the chess board but there is construction on that street and the stand is no longer there. I was able to purchase two pens at Hardy's, so mission accomplished.
Rash is still causing discomfort and not allowing for decent sleep. Regardless, tomorrow I will attempt to get up at 5:30am and run 4-6 miles. Sweating may cause short term pain but it will also help flush the nasty chemicals out of my skin.
Food in Bali is more expensive than Thailand so I was having trouble staying under budget due to the $19 taxi ride spent on my first day in Bali, but I was able to come in with a $4 surplus, not as pleasing as the $30 I was saving per week in Thailand but this week should be a bit easier to be under $90.
